Spacebase DF-9

When Double Fine announced the development of Spacebase DF-9, fans were excited because it looked like the perfect Space Station builder plus it had a name that sounds close to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Spacebase DF-9 was funded largely on the back of public funding and so expectations were high for a game that would suit the tastes of funders. Unfortunately DF-9 is now known by many as being one of the biggest flops in gaming history with Double Fine leaving buyers a game that has more breaks in it than the amount of bones Evel Knievel broke when a big stunt of his gone awry. The game crashes frequently, the station occupants are erratic and there's a file missing (Rock.lua) that causes big problems because you need to mine rocks to generate material that is needed for construction of more rooms etc and the game crashes when you attempt to mine. Even if you battle through all the problems, the game is turned on it's head by Raiders suddenly invading the base again and again until your station is nothing but filled with the bodies of all your station residents and destroyed equipment.

Double Fine ended development with the game sitting on v1.06, that classification is considered laughable to some with most believing the word Beta or even Alpha should be attached to v1.06. A group of fans who call themselves Derelict Games has taken the remains of the game after the game's source code was released by Double Fine and has released additional material for the game, the team provided the missing Rock.lua file that caused the mining crash and have given the game a new life by adding new items including a Jukebox, the option to form a Security team plus more. The game is now unofficially patched as v1.08.1 (v1.08.1 patch downloadable from here), there is still lots for Derelict Games to try and fix which has not been an easy task but they deserve all the praise in the world for trying to give value for money to those who paid Double Fine for Spacebase DF-9.
