Commander: The Great War (PC)

Commander: The Great War is a strategy game in which a player can fight as either the Central Powers or the Entente Powers. The game was developed by The Lordz Games Studio and released by Slitherine. The game has five campaigns to choose from with players able to choose either of the two sides, there are three AI settings and tutorial messages can be enabled or disabled. The first campaign covers the entire war from its beginnings in Serbia and spreads to Belgium, France, Russia, Africa, Turkey, Italy until all the major nations pick a side in the war. If playing as the Entente Powers it is important to hold the advance of the Central Powers as the loss of major cities lowers morale and if a nations morale hits zero they will surrender. Out of Serbia and Belgium, Serbia is the hardest to send reinforcements to yet Belgium needs to be secured quickly by either French or British forces.

As you can see in the picture, the first campaign can run for 118 turns, by this point of the game the Serbians have fallen and Belgium is just hanging on. The five symbols on the bottom left corner of the screen is Factories, Manpower, Ammunition, Trains, Ports and Morale. The factory points is for spending on reinforcements or repairing units, manpower is for units, the ammunition is for your Artillery and Navy, Trains is send your forces to locations faster on the rail lines, Ports is to land reinforcements or merchant convoys (they are on automatic) and morale keeps you in the game. Each unit has a HP of 10, selecting a unit and then putting your cursor over the target will tell you what the projected casualties will be allowing you to make an informed decision on who to attack (see below).

Repairing units can be done but it will take manpower and factory, to repair units click on the wrench on the bottom right hand side. Units can be upgraded by first researching upgrades in the research section then updating your units by pressing the middle option right above 'Menu'. This game will take up many hours of your time and is fun but the game can easily slip away from your grasp if you forget about areas of the conflict. Rating: 4 out of 5.
