RimWorld

RimWorld has been a game that has been in development for many years and is on the cusp of being released as a complete game. RimWorld may look like an uncomplicated game with simple graphics but it is far from it. I started off with a colony of three, I had no buildings just a scattering of supplies and wreckage laying around. Trees had to be cut down, rooms had to be built, a fire lit, and animals hunted quickly before any of my members fell ill or died from starvation. It is important to set aside an indoor area for storage as items left outside will degrade such as clothing, weapons. Cargo Pods and depositing a variety of items from food, clothing or other items which can be collected though any slags of steel that comes crashing down cannot be used until you research a smelter. Bits of spacecraft land nearby and can be picked apart for steel that requires no smelting which is important when you make items such as the wood stove. Crops can be grown but it is not a free for all as you need some crops require your colonists to have a certain level of experience so you will have to wait before you can grow the type of crop that allows you to make herbal medicines.

Traders will visit you and you can trade for goods but not all visitors come to trade as you will get raiders who will either kill your colonists or capture incapacitated colony members. New colony members come from wanderers, people seeking asylum (raiders will follow) or you capture raiders, imprison them and convince them to join you. Colonists can get diseases and lose limbs in combat, they can bleed out, can die from malnutrition, they can get things such as food poisoning and can have mental illness as well and the mental illness can be triggered by disintegrating clothes, working too hard, eating raw food and more. Some colonists when mentally broken will wander around aimlessly and cannot be used for jobs, others will attack the colony's pets, prisoners or fellow colonists with the aim to kill. Building a research desk is important as it will allow you to research new items from new sources of food to weapons and manufacturing processes, you do not get all the good stuff at once. Colonists can be given areas to work in or if you like them to roam around you can set priorities from 1 to 4 with 1 being the highest priority or leaving the job option blank so they will not touch that job. There are some jobs that individual colonists will not do such as cutting crops or hauling material and this could impact your colony if it is decimated by attacks etc leaving you short of capable workers. There are also natural disasters such as storms setting off fires and more, these fires if not put out quickly by colonists or by rain can destroy everything in its path. Based on all the above it is advisable to save your game and save it often as things can change in your colony in an instant. RimWorld is an excellent game and we've played 68 hours of it so far trying to keep the colony alive and it is time well spent. Rating: 5 out of 5.
